Kori unit 1, the first commercial nuclear power plant in Korea, was permanently shut down in 2017, and Wolsong unit 1, a heavy water reactor type, was permanently shut down in 2019. In Korea, many technologies have been developed for nuclear power plant decommissioning so far, and innovative & creative technology development will continue to be made in the future, and this should be taken as an opportunity for the nuclear power plant decommissioning industry to take off.
In particular, in the case of the pressurized heavy water reactor, there is no case of decommissioning worldwide, so it is highly likely that Wolsong unit 1 in Korea will be the first decommissioning case. This is a good opportunity to lead the world in the heavy water reactor nuclear decommissioning industry through domestic technology development and performance.
The decontamination & dismantling division of the Korea Radioactive Waste Society is promoting Spring/Autumn workshops, academic conference paper presentations (oral & poster), and decommissioning technology exchange meetings in various fields for decommissioning of light & heavy water reactors.
